The History of Coral Gables
Opened in 1901 by the Leiendecker Boys, the current Coral Gables building has been around for over 100 years and was used as a hotel and bar. It was originally called The Old Crow Bar and Hotel, and before that, Hotel Saugatuck. Before that, The Columbia Hotel, owned by J.F Hall, and before THAT, The Kalamazoo Hotel. Over the years it hasn’t gone through many changes, other than modernization.
Currently, Coral Gables is a bar and restaurant on the waterside, located directly next to a marina, making it popular for sailors. They also have various attractions, such as a rock climbing wall and trampoline. Currently, there are no longer rooms for rent, but they have debated re-adding them due to popular demand. The current owner is Mike Johnson, son of Tom Johnson, the owner who renamed the bar to Coral Gables after purchasing it from Dale Crow.
